The Downland Practice
Diagnostic Ultrasound LOCATION In the Berkshire Downs, North of Newbury and covers an area of 120 square miles and a population of over 10,000. There is a normal age and social class distribution. DOCTORS Four whole-time and two part-time partners. Two part-time assistants. One Registrar and one or two F2 Hospital Doctors Average list size 2000. Special Interests include Diabetes (Dr Wardle) Family Planning (Dr Dyson) Ultrasound and RCGP Examiner (Dr Lowenthal), PCT Issues (Dr Cave). Children (Dr Hunter) DISPENSING The practice dispenses to all its patients. There is also a Pharmacy on site. This is an integral part of (and owned by) the practice, and allows us to have a superintendent pharmacist as part of our primary health care team. PREMISES One purpose built site at Chieveley and a branch surgery at Compton. There are dedicated and fully equipped consulting rooms for the registrar at both sites. TRAINING The practice has been a training practice since 1986 and is attached to the Reading Vocational Training Scheme which provides a full-day per week day release course. The practice also takes on medical students from Oxford. Full online access to library databases is available from all computer terminals. An intranet enables fast access to practice information and protocols.

EQUIPMENT The practice is fully computerised, using the EMIS System, and the 2 surgeries are connected by land line. Desktop terminals for all. Diagnostic equipment includes ECG machines, Audiometry, foetal heart monitors and an ultrasound scanner which we use for simple obstetrics and echocardiography. We also have desktop ophthalmoscopes and auroscopes in all consulting rooms. STAFF We have a full time Practice Manager, a full complement of Reception, Administrative and Dispensing Staff, plus a minibus driver (who ferries the patients in and medicines out). They form an
enthusiastic and dedicated team. nursing sisters and a health visitor with full auxiliary support. We have five practice nurses, one health care assistant, one midwife, a community dietitian, an attached surgery physiotherapist, a smoking counsellor, a domiciliary physiotherapist, and a counsellor and substance misuse counsellor..
